Have you ever noticed that sometimes growth is fluid?
It’s my son’s voice growing deeper by the minute
leading up to his 13th birthday
or my daughter’s face narrowing and eyes growing bold in her third-grade school picture
my body finally strengthening after years of being forced to shrink
And sometimes growth is earned
like moons aligned perfectly on two wrists
and book ideas getting the attention they deserve
As I sit here in the beginning of fall, I’m taking the time marvel at how change and growth are painstakingly slow at times. It’s gears grinding during the transition. You’re working hard and wondering when it gets better, but that’s none of your business. You keep going and then suddenly enormous beauty emerges.
It no longer feels forced. The residue clears. That mental friction dissipates. That’s when you know you’ve arrived in the present.
Today I am feeling present. I can clearly see the beauty all around me, a result of years of imperceptible steps forward.
